Audio/Video Quality: Apprentass 5 was presented in the same 1.33:1 ratio full frame color the twenty clips were originally shot in by directors like Mike Quasar, Wendi Knight, Mark Davis, Chris Streams, and others for release by Zero Tolerance. The quality of the scenes varied a lot more than usual since they came from source material shot over the period of about 16 months, for directors of varying quality, and under the various time and budget constraints any company would have. This said, none of the scenes looked terrible and some looked quite good. The fleshtones were often very accurate, the lighting professionally handled, and the amounts of grain negligible although some of the scenes looked washed out; perhaps due to DVD mastering problems. There were minor visual flaws in many of the scenes but also nuances favorable to repeat play. The audio was presented in 2.0 Dolby Digital English though there did not appear to be any separation between the vocals and the music wasn't worth mentioning.

Body of Review: Like a great many companies of late, Zero Tolerance has decided to cash in on what could be described as the compilation craze. The idea of any good compilation is to provide fans with the type of action or performer they prefer to see, much like musical compilations take the one hit wonders and group them all together. The idea of bad compilations is to simply gyp the consumer and make easy money. Zero Tolerance has made some fine porn in the last several years; ripe hunting ground for a series of compilations but my issue with them is that they routinely edit their compilations to include only the specified footage as was the case in Cum Stains 7 and Big Rack Attack. Today's review of Apprentass 5 is the same case as the 20 scenes all included anal action while editing out the rest of the scene. The back DVD cover said: "e;Back in business! The search for the next Apprentass is the kind of reality programming you can really get behind! Rather then bore you with the almost generic nature of the scenes, suffice it to say that they all had anal action and pop shots but the rest of the footage; including the tease, the blowjobs, the vaginal and all the other stuff that made some of these scenes great in the first place was excised out. If you just want to see the anal penetration and pop shots though, this will be Nirvana for you and I'd be lying if I said that most of the women were not actively and aggressively riding cock as though possessed. Summary: Apprentass 5 wisely used Lanny Barby as the gal on the front DVD cover and she was looking especially nice. Still, I hate edited scenes and the full title Apprentass 5: You're Fucked! seemed a bit too appropriate to me after seeing the first dozen scenes hacked up beyond recognition. Zero Tolerance has made dozens of excellent releases in the last three years (I've only picked up a handful of screeners but I've borrowed from the stashes of far more lenient reviewers so I've seen more than a few of the original scenes so I have had something to compare these versions too) and I hope that someday they'll release compilations with fewer BUT UNEDITED scenes to enjoy or at least prominently label them as such (also provide a list of titles they came from on the outside of the DVD cover for consumers). Until then, I feel obligated to rate this one as a Skip It. If you don't mind edited scenes, by all means check this one out for the pulse pounding anal action, just keep in mind that the full scenes were always better by a substantial margin.

I've never been totally satisfied with Zero Tolerance's technical quality, but that's not the case with this release. While not the absolute best, the video quality is definitely adequate for an Adult DVD. There are very few flaws in the actual print, and I was hard pressed to find any pixilation or compression artifacts. The colors were all crisp and extremely lifelike. The audio is presented in the standard 2.0 stereo. There was no background music to interfere with the moaning of the actors. Overall a solid job by Zero Tolerance.
