With his two-volume graphic story "e;Maus"e; ("e;mouse"e; in German), Art Spiegelman has achieved a double revolution: he has brought the Shoah into the world of comics, and thus into mainstream culture, without ever betraying the historical and narrative rigor required to convey the experience. By rendering both the testimony of his father Vladek, a Polish Jew who survived Auschwitz and emigrated to New York after the war, and his often difficult dialogue with his father, he also established comics as an art of reality. Yet in 1980, when his first plates appeared in Raw, the alternative comics magazine he edited, his enterprise was unthinkable: a comic strip about extermination camps, featuring Jews as mice, Nazis as cats and goy Poles as pigs?
