Notes:
- The videostream with the FEL DoVI layer was demuxed with MakeMKV. All the rest with eac3to;
- The supposedly 'Stereo' remixes are, after all, dual monos (with the exception of the initial Studio Canal logo sequence). This was checked with Audacity and then confirmed with Sox. The 'stereo' track from the Studio Canal GER BD can be considered stereoized mono but, again, it's a very faint shadow in Sox and undetected by Audacity. Reading reviews online I thought they used the original stems and actually mastered a new real 2.0 stereo track from it:
The stereo track was created by StudioCanal from the original stems. Clicks, thumps, hiss, and hum were manually removed using Pro Tools HD. Crackle was attenuated using AudioCube&s integrated audio workstation.
The fact remains that if I wanted to keep the original remastered mono track (and this was the main priority) I 'd be, in practice, adding two mono tracks. So, the dual mono tracks were left out. In any case, I much rather prefer the original monaural track;
- The above meant slowing down the 24 fps video of the UHD to 23.976 fps so that the Criterion mono track could be used. It was then synced with a few edits as was the commentary track, unique to the Criterion release(s). Besides some minor mid-movie edits, some compromises had to be made at the beginning and end. In the beginning, the Studio Canal logo sequence had to be silenced since it shows up much later in the Criterion BD; at the end the Criterion has extended credits with restoration details. The music in both UHD and the BD is exactly the same until the moment the Criterion starts adding those credits. Then the Criterion has a piano solo for that sequence. Thankfully, the previous music ends in fade-out (pretty sure it's the original one - the piano solo was added specifically for the extra credits) and a clean cut is possible without any disruption. The way the music ends in the UHD is exactly the same way as it ends in the edited mono track;
- Subtitles were used from all above sources, synced and tonemapped to the lightness of the UHD ones (58%). The iTunes one is the same translation as the Studio Canal. French forced was set as default, according to the rules, this being a French spoken movies;
- Still regarding subtitles, and that's mainly why this took so long being released, I admit defeat when it comes to the HD-DVD source on site which would have allowed me to add Dutch and Nordic subtitles. Despite the invaluable help of quite a few people, namely losslesslove who helped me a lot, vevv (who did the great job of at least extracting them in some form), Renner and sunn, I could not find a way to convert them into some usable format. It is what it is and it was not for lack of help that I didn't succeed. I posted a thread in a development forum and hope to get more info on this;
- Named chapters from the Criterion were synced to I-frames/scene changes and one was added for the end credits sequence
