RELEASE NOTES
This is a classic and important film, so I took time and care with some special surgery. Despite supposedly working on the restoration master together, the new Criterion Collection USA UHD Blu-ray is significantly different with colour, grade, tone, and encoding, mostly superior to the Pathé FRA UHD Blu-ray (see pq comparison here, here, or here). However, there is one glaring exception, which is the iconic opening credits scene, for which Criterion strangely used an internegative/interpositive, with blown out windows and significantly blurrier image, while Pathé seemed to have a first generation source (as shown here). No clue what happened behind the scenes, but fortunately, I was able to cut out that specific scene from the FRA release at keyframe, with only 1 frame (42ms) difference from the Criterion video, which made it possible to splice in and merge together, then sync back up easily with the lossless audio and subtitles. Worth noting, there seem to be a few other scenes where Criterion has far more grain/scan noise, but I left those alone, as the final image still had a better grade, with no loss of detail or completely blown out highlights, unlike the opening credits scene, which was an obvious win on the FRA disc.
Suffice to say, this is a subjective call, but one I am very confident in making and happy it can be done without any re-encoding of audio or video. As the cherry on top, I converted all video parts to proRes, analyzed and generated Dolby Vision profile 8 metadata (latest algo, balanced tuning) for the film using DaVinci Resolve 18.6.6.7, then injected into the final HEVC track, which significantly improves the darker HDR grade that Criterion completed without a DoVi pass for retail. I can actually imagine a reissue or replacement program for this disc from Criterion later on, but I'm not holding my breath. Enjoy this influential film friends!
