SVT-AV1-PSY: After extensive testing between stock AOM-AV1 & SVT-AV1 vs. SVT-AV1-PSY, this encoder will be using SVT-AV1-PSY. It has different default settings than 10bit for 10bit, disabled film denoising, improved tuning, enabled quantization matrices, enabled variance boost, etc… PSY documentation
AV1 PRESETS: After more testing and comparisons with HEVC at similar bitrates and crf values across 20 different movies from 80s to today, the crf value usage will remain fairly similar to what was used with HEVC. Instead of slow/medium/fast settings in HEVC there are “presets” in AV1 and each enables/disables certain tools the encoder uses. Again, after a lot of testing, it&s been decided that preset 5 will be used for a variety of reasons unless denoted otherwise (p4 = preset 4). Because the AV1 encoder has yet to include settings readable by mediainfo (annoying, yes!) here is the AV1 preset documentation. See column FIVE. AV1 “preset” documentation
VMAF: Like all quality metric measurements, it is far from perfect or even completely finished - that said, it&s pretty darn good overall. The proprietary old “SSIM SCORE” number (which was the B-frame SSIM Mean - 0.09x1042) used at a metric for previous encodes will be replaced with VMAF (revision 3.0) mean scores in an effort to be as transparent as possible about “perceived” quality. VMAF tests are run at subsample=60 over the full length of the original and encoded video and takes hours to process post-encode for every single video. VMAF documentation
AV1 (KNOWN) DEVICE COMPATIBILITY: Amazon FireStick 4K Max, Dune HD Homatics Box R 4K Plus, RockTek G2 4K Android TV Box, M3 Chip Macs and beyond (hardware decoding), etc...
Two bonus AV1 deep dives: HERE and HERE.
Finally, the usecase, computation power, priorities of the encoder, the target audience, and the aim of the production, the target location (network, storage, archive, etc), the source video (anime, movies, amateur videos, documentaries, genres of the movies, color distribution), target quality and target size drastically change among people.
Enjoy!
