Anslyn's Notes On His or Hers Edit:
-----------------------------------
When Godzilla Raids Again was released in America in 1959 it was known as Gigantis, The Fire Monster where, unlike the Raymond Burr Godzilla, all the dialogue in the movie was dubbed. The film was dubbed at Ryder Sound Services in New York and featured the voice talents of Keye Luke, Paul Frees, and George Takei. The English dialogue was based on a loose interpretation, rather than an accurate translation, of the original Japanese dialogue. Unique to the American version, however, was this almost nonstop narration from central character Tsukioka that was often just telling you what you could plainly see on the screen.
I decided to take the English dub and the original Japanese version to make something more faithful to the original version by cutting out all the extraneous narration and where non-dialogue scenes from the Japanese version ran longer, to make use of those longer scenes. My own version of the dubbed Godzilla Raids Again is now finished. I did leave the newly shot prologue that was added to the American version in this cut.
Besides removing the narration, there was a scene in Gigantis where Dr. Yamane, from the original Godzilla, turns up to explain how difficult it will be to stop Godzilla. He shows a film made up of scenes from the original Godzilla. In the American version this sequence was padded out with stock footage from dinosaur movies, some of which are actually pretty hokey. All of that padded out dinosaur footage has been removed to make it more faithful to the Japanese version. The narration by Dr. Yamane is not in the Japanese version so the sequence is more dark in tone. I removed that narration as well and replaced it with a 16mm projector sound effect.
I just finished watching the edit, and overall, I'm pretty pleased with the result. Without the narration, the overall result as a film that is more serious in tone.
