I've uploaded a video showing the kind of leg iron training I did with lyta before I took her to work alongside mia at Bridgewood for the first time. This video uses the pony walker bar attached to a ring in a ceiling in my cellars.
The Darby style leg irons are an 18th century design and the metal has rounded corners suitable for extended periods of captivity and hard labour. They were a staple of prisons, slave ships, plantations, penal colonies etc throughout this period, and the pair I've used here were manufactured by Hiatts in Birmingham to the same pattern they'd used for two hundred years.However, to walk or march in them, it's necessary to hold the middle of the leg iron chain up off the ground and to hold the ankle cuffs up off the Achilles tendon at the back of the ankles. The two parts of the video show lyta with and without a walking chain to hold the leg irons up in this way and there's quite a difference in how quickly she can move and how much pain she's in.
I used keakaj's metronome app to set her pace. Before this summer, when I used the pony walker I always maintained the pace myself, with a cane or whip to encourage the girl to speed up when necessary. I found a natural tendency to slow down over time, especially when hooded, as fatigue and fear of knocking into something rise in her. However, after a brief period of training with the whip and the metronome app I've been able to obtain a constant pace during a training session, and control that pace indirectly by just adjusting the speed of the metronome. lyta reports that when hooded and walking, her entire focus of her mind is on the sound of the metronome beats and each step she is about to take.
In this video, lyta had been hooded and locked down in the Cell for about half an hour beforehand, which also added to her eagerness to be completely compliant and entirely pleasing. Unusually, I wasn't standing at the side of the room with a whip, although she had no idea of this and in fact had no idea what was going to happen to her from the moment the hood first went on before the Cell.
