Audio:
The new restoration has a number of issues, to the point of being outright botched: a loud constant 50 Hz hum throughout (particularly noticable in quiet moments, of which this moment has plenty), small dropouts, pops, jarring bad patches, and even some random beeping. Curiously, the first 20 minutes is seemingly sourced from a more detailed source than the rest, with a noticable pop on the switchover point.
Criterion Blu-ray is the only one with a different source, reusing their old DVD mastering instead, which is free of said issues... but not without problems of its own. Some quieter low-frequency sounds, particularly car noises, have been attentuated away. Quality-wise, Criterion is better overall, but BFI does edge it out in a few spots.
Given all of the above, I've opted to include both tracks, keeping Criterion as main, and BFI as alternate, with the 50 Hz constant hum attentuated.
Criterion runs at 23.976, so to avoid re-encoding the main audio, the video FPS has been changed to 23.976, and the BFI tracks were re-encoded. BFI commentary was dual mono, so one channel was dropped.
All the problems listed are included in the comparison samples below.
Comparison: Samples, Spectrograms
Notes:
BFI has 17 extra frames at three different points for a total of 51 extra frames, which have been accounted for when syncing audio/subtitles (see VS snippet below for specifics).
Criterion and BFI have different translations, included both.
Unusually, I could not find any French subtitles for this film. The track on the 2023 FRA disc is actually English, mislabeled.
Thanks to KYTiCE, rmHD, RyanHG, AdBlue, JUNGLiST for all the discs!
