I remember this movie from when it first came out. It combined two all American passions: Cheerleaders and football. This was the era of NFL cheerleaders posing in men's magazines and TV movies about the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders so the adult industry had no choice but to capitalize on it. But looking back on it now, you can tell the era it was filmed in. The lighting isn&t that good, the sex scenes are short and the women are very average looking.
The storyline concerns Debbie, played by Bambi Woods, a blonde cheerleader who is trying to raise money to travel down to Dallas to try out for their cheerleading squad. Her friends, the other cheerleaders, promise to help her try and raise money by getting odd jobs around town. Early on in the movie, there are a few scenes of the squad in the locker room in various stages of undress. The first sex scene comes when three football players come into the women&s shower to have their way with Misty Winter and Kasey Rodgers. This is a typical ‘70s scene featuring bad angles, hairy genitalia and lots of views at man ass. However, Misty gives a pretty good blowjob and Kasey takes a large facial.

This is standard ‘70s porn, that is, you come in not expecting too much. This is almost the original version of the gonzo film because there&s only a thin storyline connecting everything. Most of the scenes are of blowjobs and Debbie isn&t featured too much in a movie bearing her name. This is worth a rental only because of the classic nature of this feature.

When Bambi Woods (Debbie) wins an opportunity to be a Texas Cowgirl, she and her fellow cheerleaders will stop at nothing to pay for the trip, even if it means providing special "e;services"e; to the local community's men. Such is the case in "e;Debbie Does Dallas"e;, a very good, extraordinarily recognizable classic from director Jim Buckley and VCX. Indeed, this release is light-hearted, comical, easy to follow, cleverly-titled, and fairly sexy, making it easy to understand just why it has maintained its popularity over the years. If you haven't seen it, you really can't call yourself a true porn fan.

In terms of the sex, three of the guys from the school football team (Steve Marshall, David Morris, and Herschel Savage) aren't happy about the girls' abstinence while trying to raise funds for Debbie, so they sneak up on Kasey Rodgers and Christie Ford in the ladies' shower room at school (Scene One). Of course, the two lasses are more than happy to see them and more than willing to accept their cocks, as well. Oral and vaginal action ensues, with each of them getting their fair share of the D. The First Word: In case you've been under a rock, Debbie Does Dallas is one of the best known adult films of all time, probably right after Deep Throat.  It's a must see for anyone who is interested in classic adult films, and a must-own for collectors.

What's It About?:  Debbie Benton (Bambi Woods) is a high school cheerleader who is selected to be a "e;Texas Cowgirl."e;  Unfortunately, her parents  don't want her to go and won't pay for her expenses.  So Debbie has to come up with a plan to raise the cash in two weeks.  Her cheerleading squad offers to help her raise the money -- maybe even enough to go with her -- and they decide to get part time jobs as a fundraiser.

Tammy (Arcadia Lake) goes to the record store, where Jimmy gives her a job.  Debbie goes to Greenfeld's Sporting Goods store and begs Mr. Greenfeld (R. Bolla) for a job.  Mr. Greenfeld, envisioning himself having his way with young Debbie, almost stumbles over himself to let her do odd jobs around the store, especially on weekends.  Roberta (Christie Ford) runs into Mr. Hardwick (Eric Edwards) while walking down the street, and when she explains their goal, he tells her that he and Mrs. Hardwick need help with inventory at their candle shop. Annie and Rikki (Jenny Cole and Sherri Tart) are going to wash Mr. Bradly's car.  Donna (Merle Michaels) has a job at the Library and Lisa (Georgette Sanders) has a job as a towel girl at the tennis courts.

After cheerleading practice, Pat (Kasey Rodgers) and Roberta are lingering in the locker room showers, when a group of football players (including well-known studs David Morris and Herschel Savage) come in, naked and ready for a 4 on 2 orgy on the shower floor.  After some clowning around, the sex starts in earnest with Roberta bobbing up and down on a very thick and hard penis.  From there, each guy gets some action (and in the case of Hershel, several times -- in fact he manages two very large pops) in what has to be most teenage guys' top fantasy.

What I liked: Classic Golden Age adult cinema:  It's hard to explain why films like Debbie Does Dallas are considered classics or why they are so appealing to many fans.  Elements such as more developed plot lines, higher production values (such as custom written songs or music tracks, location shooting, and shot-on-film), and less emphasis on in-your-face hardcore set classic porn from today's modern offerings.  The performers aren't gorgeous (some are rather plain or worse), but they are all-natural, have an honest quality to their acting, and have genuine chemistry during sex.  There's a conscious effort to stimulate the mind, not just the genitals, by exploring fantasies and eroticism.  And let's not forget that there's not a lot of anal, girl-girl, or gynecologist shots in films prior to the early 80s.  While that will probably rule out this genre for the raincoaters among us, it's a welcomed change for couples and those seeking more refined porn.

Fun, fun, fun: All of the sex in Debbie Does Dallas is performed with real enthusiasm and zeal -- no mechanical fucking, jerking off for the money shot, bored looks, or ridiculously acrobatic positions.  From the orgy in the locker room shower, to Herschel's gooey pop in the library, to Debbie's "e;deflowering"e; at the hands of Mr. Greenfeld, it's all top notch porn.  Throw in some spanking, gratuitous nude girls showering, and a lot of lecherous men, and you've got a winner.

What I didn't like: That 70's Show: Often I hear from people that they don't like classic porn because the looks are dated and old fashioned.  That's definitely true with Debbie Does Dallas.  While it's not as obvious as other 70's movies, you still have a boat load of outdated fashions and locations, from clothing, to furniture, to hairdos.  When's the last time when you visited a record store?  Saw an athletic field with bright green astroturf?  Or witnessed Herschel Savage with an afro and huge, thick glasses?  The list goes on and on....  But while the styles change, the sex and eroticism remain.  I don't particularly care for the 70's look, but it's only a minor irritation.

Bush!!!:  While I like full bushes, the ladies (and men) in this movie have pubic hair to spare.  If you're expecting neatly trimmed bushes with shaved lips, you're going to be very disappointed.  What you will get is a pretty-typical view of what porn theater patrons saw as the ideal pussy look.  As I mentioned before, maybe the hair is a good thing for Debbie Does Dallas, since otherwise, some of the girls would look underage (and combined with references that the girls are 16 in the dialogue, this movie would probably have been censored or pulled from distribution.  Anyway, just a word of warning for those who can't stand pubes that aren't groomed or completely bald.

DVD Extras: None.  There's just a full-motion video chapter selection menu instead of a proper main menu.  No trailers, no photos, no nothing.  It would have been nice to see something other than bare-bones treatment for one of the best adult movies of all time, but fortunately the movie stands well by itself and the disc is often budget priced so you won't feel cheated.

A/V Quality: The video quality is good considering this is a late 70's release that was shot on film.  I've seen a lot of mainstream films of this era that look worse on DVD.  You'll see quite a bit of film scratches and other defects, but they aren't horrible.  Strangely, that seems to enhance its "e;classic"e; appeal as it looks like a porno you'd find under your dad's hidden collection.  The color balance seems to be okay and comparing it to the VHS copy of Debbie Does Dallas, there seems to be little difference between the two.  The audio is simple and is unremarkable, allowing you to enjoy the film without complaints about volume, static, or any major defects.

The Last Word: As long as you can get this one at a reasonable price, it's very unlikely that you'll be disappointed with this classic gem.  Bambi Woods is one of the most recognizable adult stars even though the number of movies she made can be counted with less than one hand, and Debbie Does Dallas is the reason why.  It would have been nice to have more extras on NuTech's DVD, but I still recommend it wholeheartedly.

Filmed in and around New York City in July, 1977, Jim Clark's 83 minute DEBBIE DOES DALLAS (1978) stands as one of the most-watched xxx films of the Classic Era or any other era, but is the movie any good? Does it warrant VCX's Double-disc, 30th Anniversary Definitive Collector's Edition? The answer, yep!

Disc-1

DEBBIE DOES DALLAS starts with Debbie Benton (Bambi Woods, long since AWOL from the XXX scene)and a bunch of cheerleader gal pals trying to come up with money for Debbie's trip to Texas to join the "e;Cowgirl"e; cheer leading squad. The discussion during practice leads the cheerleaders to the locker room where they hatch a scheme to make money and join Debbie on her trek to the cheerleader tryout.

Debbie lands a job with the horny Mr. Greenfeld (R. Bolla) at his sporting goods store and soon discovers that selling her body will speed up the process. So, the gals gather in the locker room and decide to go as far as they would go with their boyfriend with these new employers, make more, quick money, and that's the thrust of the rest of DEBBIE DOES DALLAS. Therefore, each cheerleader has a scene or two with an employer or two that builds to Debbie's encounter with Mr. Greenfeld for the anticipated finale.

The opening sexual encounter occurs in the showers with Roberta (Christie Ford) and Pat (Kasey Rogers, who disappears after her sex scene) taking on some members of a crummy football team including a young Hershel Savage, David Morris and a Steve Marshall. (now, a respected NYC surgeon) A very pale Kasey Rogers gets it from Hershel and Steve but her long wet red hair and gorgeous face wins me over during the terrific facial; Christie Ford is solid in this very wet yet well-shot and edited encounter---!!!

So, DEBBIE DOES DALLAS (1978) works on a few levels: Debbie adorned in the cheerleader outfit satisfies the male fantasy of wanting to fuck a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader, a group super popular in the late 1970s; Debbie as your everyday run-of-the-mill cheerleaders makes it with a rather nebbish Mr. Greenfeld, which also fulfills every nerdy guy's fantasy of making it with the prettiest girl around; toss in the fantasy of an employer wanting to fucking his pretty employee.

Also, the film teases us with the Debbie and Mr. Greenfeld encounters then delivers in a pretty big way for that extended finale. Plus, the other lesser known performers are pretty good here and look really terrific in it's standard-frame re-mastered form. I've never seen this film look so good. So, DEBBIE DOES DALLAS (1978, VCX's 30th Anniversary Edition, 2008) receives a final rating of !!!!

Wait, there's more! Extras include the original trailer, Spanish audio (Beware! The dubbing seems pretty horrible during the big finale) and two separate commentaries, one from the ever-informative Hershel Savage and another from the loopy, sometimes catty Robin Byrd.

Disc-2

The cable version of DEBBIE DOES DALLAS is the headliner of the second disc; but at 62 minutes, it's missing more than 20 minutes of XXX footage. So, the overall teasing structure is intact but without the well-photographed naughty bits of the original.

The real reason to dig around on the second disc is to watch the Hershel Savage trio of extras: Tales of a Porn star, Uncut (follows the credits of Tales) and Hershel Savage Screws the Stars---!!! 1/2

The Making of Robin Byrd details her long professional career in fuck films and as a host of her long-running NYC cable-access sex show. Her schtick here is much more interesting and informative than her commentary on Disc 1---!!!

So, the Hershel extras run about 90 minutes and Robin's thing runs about 37 minutes, so there's 2 hours to watch even if the cable version of DEBBIE DOES DALLAS fails to impress. A photo gallery and 4 trailers are also included. Final rating for Disc 2 is !!! 1/2---!!!!!

A final rating for VCX's 30th Anniversary of DEBBIE DOES DALLAS is !!!! outa !!!!! for the 2-disc set. The real excitement here is seeing suck a bright and colorful original version of DEBBIE DOES DALLAS come back to life. Also, being a young guy who often fast-forwarded to Bambi's scene, I really enjoyed these other performances by sexy 70s creatures like Georgette Saunders, Arcadia Lake and Rikki O'Neal. In addition, the film works as a typical XXX comedy that has not a single lesbian scene. A good show with plenty of extras. I also recommend a documentary called DEBBIE DOES DALLAS: UNCOVERED (2006) as a companion to VCX's terrific 2-disc set.

Tonight on Playboy Radio Nightcalls, (Sirius XM102, around 7:45pm eastern) we&ll be talking about the 1978 classic, Debbie Does Dallas.

The movie starts with the Debbie announcing her intention to go to Texas to auditions for the Texas Cowgirls.  Members of her local cheerleading squad say they&ll help her raise the money to go — in fact, they&ll ALL go! It&s time for another trip down memory lane. This is one of my favorite of the 70&s classic porn flicks. Not because it is so much better, but hey I like cheerleader uniforms. Sue me. It is also the most like modern porn in terms of set up. It&s a simple story of Debbie, a cute young cheerleader who gets the chance to try out for the Dallas Cowgirls squad. She doesn&t have the money to make the trip though. Whatever can she do? With the help of her cute friends Debbie raises her money the old fashioned way. They tease, flirt and suck. Many of the scenes could come from reality sites today. Baby sitters caught masturbating? Car wash girls gone naked and of course, cheerleaders fucking in uniform. The sex scenes are really short and choppy which is true of pretty much every movie from this era. Half of them are BJ&s only, but most of them are pretty good. Interestingly enough there isn&t much Debbie in Debbie Does Dallas. More Bambi would have been really nice, but it is hard to complain about the other cuties in this movie. This is classic porn that is fun, sexy and it is easy to see why it has spawned so many sequels.

The Movie:
There are two porno movies that everyone, even your grandparents, has heard of. The first is Deep Throat, a movie that ushered in the era of porno chic and broke down so many walls in American society that to list them all would require a completely different piece of writing than this review will allow for. The second, and the focus of this two disc set from VCX, is Debbie Does Dallas. While this is hardly a great film or a particularly original film, it does have a certain charm and an interesting mystery that surrounds it in the form of its leading lady, Bambi Woods, who is either dead or living under a different name somewhere out there (if you're reading this, let us know what happened to you!). At the time that this movie was made, 1978 to be precise, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders were the hottest thing in all of America. It didn't matter how the football team did, their cheerleading squad was the best in the NFL and it only made sense that someone in the porno movie industry would try and capitalize on it.

At any rate, the film works on a pretty simple premise. Debbie (Bambi Woods who likes more than a little like a young Patricia Arquette and really is quite a gorgeous woman), a cute, fresh faced blonde decides she wants to get to Dallas to try out for a spot on the Texas Cowgirls cheerleading team but she just doesn't have the cash to make the trip and her parents won't front the bill. She decides to apply for various jobs as do her friends: Debbie gets a job at Mr. Greenfield (Robert Kerman of Cannibal Holocaust)'s sports store, Roberta (Christie Ford) winds up taking inventory at the candle shop run by Mr. And Mrs. Hardwick (Eric Edwards and Robin Byrd respectively), and another girl gets a two day a week job at the library.

Unfortunately, none of the girls really get anywhere until they decide to start fucking various people around town which starts when Debbie's boss offers her ten dollars to see her breasts, another ten to play with them and another ten to suck on them. They soon learn that this is a much easier and far more fun way for their trip and to make sure Debbie gets to Dallas and Mr. Greenfield winds up fronting the bill for pretty much the entire trip when Debbie agrees to let him score (which is the big finale of the film - forgive me if that spoils it for you but really, even if you haven't seen the film before you know it was going to go there - stop reading now though if you don't want to know that she's wearing her cheerleader costume and he's in a football uniform!).

The story for the film isn't all that interesting and most of the sex scenes aren't remarkable. You'd think that with the two main qualities for a successful porno movie shot down that the film would fail but it doesn't, oddly enough. It has enough charm and enough corny humor to make it completely watchable, even if you know while you're watching it that the movie isn't that erotic or that well made in the first place. To director Jim Clark's credit, the movie is paced well. It doesn't waste much time with the plot before getting to the sex beginning with a shower room gang bang scene that takes place about ten minutes into the picture where Misty Winter shows off what the good lord gave her to the sound of some fuzzed out electric guitar. From there we bounce back and forth between sex scenes and mediocre plot development bits interspersed with some funny moments and goofy music.

What makes the movie appealing, and sexy, is the way that these seemingly innocent girls take it upon themselves to take advantage of the populace of their small town and use their feminine wiles to cash in on what they know all of the men (and some of the women as Christie Ford and Robin Byrd will prove with some help from Edwards) want from them in the first place. The girls are essentially whoring, but they look so cute while they do it that you can't help but want them to make it to Dallas for the big day and if they have to suck a little dick to do it, so much the better as far as the audience is concerned. Bambi is at the front of this, showing some convincing innocence (or is it ditzinees?) in the scene early on where Bolla wants to see her tits. She really does know what's going on, we all do, but she plays it up and takes advantage of his instincts.

A couple of years back, VCX released a special edition of Debbie Does Dallas in conjunction with Media Blasters' Raincoat Theater line. At first glance, or at least judging by the cover, you'd think that this was simply a reissue of that release. Dig a little deeper though and you'll see that this is absolutely not the case.

The DVD

Video:

The 1.33.1 fullframe transfer presents the film in its original aspect ratio. The picture quality here is pretty close to the previous special edition release, though it looks like it's just slightly more compressed and maybe not quite as sharp. Color reproduction is comparable and there isn't really a big difference between the two. This isn't reference quality, but it's not a bad looking effort for an older porno movie. It's perfectly watchable and while there is a bit of print damage here and there it's nothing too serious - the good outweighs the bad.

Audio:
VCX provides two audio options for this release - a newly created Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound mix and a Dolby Digital Mono dubbed track in Spanish. There are no subtitles or closed captions provided. As far as the quality of the audio goes, the surround mix is fun as it spreads things out a bit, primarily the music, but the original mono track, which was on the last release, has been unfortunately been omitted. Regardless, dialogue is clean and clear throughout, and Alden Shuman's score comes through nicely. Levels are fine, they're balanced properly and if this sound mix isn't going to blow your mind, it really does get the job done nicely. But yeah, VCX, where's the mono?

Extras:
Here's where this release really differs from the last one. The main extra features on this release come in the form of two feature length audio commentary tracks. The first track comes courtesy of Robin Byrd who starred in the film. One of the first thing she points out is that the movie wasn't even shot in Dallas, it was shot in Brooklyn, and how they told everyone they were shooting an educational film. A lot of what Ms. Byrd does is poke fun at what happens on screen. She laughs a fair bit and points out interesting bits and pieces along the way but there's a fair bit of dead air on the track and while it's nice to hear from her, one would have to assume that her memory of her time working on the film might not be so hot anymore. Interestingly enough, she says that she didn't do the film for the money but actually did it because she liked sex. There is a moderator in the background but it's hard to hear him, he's not recorded very well. She expresses her admiration for Bambi's breasts, and talks about how at the time this film was made she used to wear infant t-shirts as she was so tiny. She makes comparisons to how the adult film industry was in the seventies to how it is now but a lot of the insight here is rather fleeting. This track appeared on the previous release.

The previous release also had a commentary from film historian Phillip Charles Bernstene moderated by Adam Trash. This track is gone and in its place is an all new commentary from Herschel Savage, who starts off by explaining that he has never appeared in the credits or on the box art for any home video release for this film. From there he explains how he got the crew inside Brooklyn College to shoot some scenes there, what it was like being in the adult film industry in 1977 during the early years of his own career and of course what it was like working on this picture. He tells a great story towards the end of the track about taking his sister and one of her friends to see one his films play theatrically on 42nd street without really realizing how horrible an idea that was at the time. There are some gaps of silence throughout but this is an interesting talk.

Rounding out the extra features on the first disc the trailer for Debbie Does Dallas, some menus, and scene selection sub-menus.

Disc two contains the softcore version of the film that runs just a hair over fifty-two minutes and is pretty much the same movie without the penetration scenes which kind of kills the point of the movie. Regardless, it's here as a companion piece to the uncut version and like the softcore version that was included on the second disc of The Devil In Miss Jones, it's really more of a curiosity item than anything else. This version doesn't look nearly as nice as the restored feature on the first disc and it suffers from some odd combing, but it's nice to see it here for the sake of completion.

Also on this disc is a video interview with Robin Byrd, who now sports massive fake hooters, entitled The Making Of Robin Byrd. This appeared on the previous release and it's cool to see it carried over this time around again. She talks about growing up in New York, how she got into the adult film industry after discovering sex at the age of twelve and a half. The lighting isn't so hot on this piece, things are pretty dark, but it's interesting to hear how Robin majored in art at college and how she put herself through school. She talks about posing for High Society and doing a layout for them, and how she was the orgy queen in the seventies and how she worked in television for a while on The Robin Byrd Show (there are some cool clips provided here). She started in porno movies around that time and has since made a career out of it. The whole thing clocks in at just under thirty-seven minutes in length and it gives us a pretty extensive look at Bird's lengthy career in pornography and some interesting biographical information as well.

Also found on the second disc are some exclusive featurettes, just in case you don't have enough Herschel Savage in your life. The first is Herschel Savage: Tales Of A Porn Star (1:09:42). This near feature length documentary looks at Savage's life and work from his early days working alongside R. Bolla (who helped him get in touch with the right managers and promoters) to what it was like working in the industry during the golden years and how it has changed over the decades. He talks about his working relationship with director Ted Snyder and about his mob connections, and about various other cast and crew that he's been involved with over the many years he's been a dick for hire. It's a fairly interesting piece and Savage, never without a sense of humor, tells some good stories here. The second featurette is Herschel Savage Screws The Stars and judging by the fact that he's sitting in the exact same spot as he was in the last featurette, this was made at the same time by the same people. Here Herschel gives a rundown on what it was like working with some of the most beautiful women of the industry at the time. He gives us his thoughts on the likes of legends like Seka, Kay Parker, Annette Haven, Amber Lynn and more. It's all pretty respectfully done and you get the impression that Herschel really liked a lot of the ladies he came into contact with over the years.

Rounding out the extras on this disc are a still gallery and trailers for Eruption, Little Girls Blue, Prisoner Of Paradise and Inside Desiree Cousteau.

Final Thoughts:
While Debbie Does Dallas is far from the best dirty movie of the era, it was hugely influential and it did have quite an impact. Bambi Woods is likeable enough in the lead and the mystery around her disappearance makes the movie more interesting than it would be otherwise. If you've got the previous special edition release you might want to hold on to it for the original mono mix and the exclusive commentary but if you don't, this 30th Anniversary Edition has more extras and is likely going to be much easier to find. Highly recommended.
