Plot Summary:
Set in the 1970s,"A Woman's Torment" explores the struggles of a well-to-do couple, Don and Frances, whose marriage is strained by the presence of Frances's mentally ill sister, Karen, living with them. Karen, who has gone mute, becomes a source of conflict as the couple debates her future, including the possibility of committing her to an asylum. Seeking help, they consult their psychologist friend Otis and his dissatisfied wife, Estelle. When Karen learns of their intentions, she escapes to an abandoned beach house on Fire Island. There, she experiences a series of disturbing sexual encounters that culminate in her unleashing her inner turmoil through violent actions.
