Mishiro experienced a traumatic event in childhood when half of his soul was consumed by a toothed deity. This incident led to his ongoing struggle with spirits known as kotowari, which are soul fragments stemming from the suffering of individuals connected to him, regardless of their proximity. Kotowari can only be perceived by the person suffering and will continue to manifest unless the underlying cause of their suffering is addressed. Upon transferring to a school located in a historically rich sightseeing town, Mishiro encounters a kotowari and resolves to locate its owner. He soon discovers that multiple girls around him are also affected, each carrying their own kotowari tied to their personal suffering.
