Elise looks up from the kitchen table, her eyes scanning my face as I enter the house.

"Brian!Welcome back," she calls out, sounding more cheerful than I expect, given our current situation. The bags under her eyes betray her efforts to stay strong.

I set my things down,"You've... uh,you've been taking care of the house all by yourself, El?" Ihesitate, not sure how to approach the awkwardness between us.

She stands, dusting off her hands, and offers a small smile."It wasn't easy, but yeah, we've managed. Things have changed, haven't they?"Elise looks around the house, her gaze lingering on the photos of Mom and Dad that we've left untouched.

Itake a deep breath,"We need to talk, Elise. About... us, the house, everything."

My voice trails off as I notice the changes around the house.
